Scrum.org's PSM-I Certification

The PSM (Professional Scrum Master) certification is issued by Scrum.org. Scrum.org was founded by Ken Schwaber after leaving the Scrum Alliance. Personally, I chose to get the PSM over the CSM (Certified Scrum Master certification, issued by Scrum Alliance) because I wanted to save on the cost and I had already completed the CSM training through a previous job that provided us with training but not the certification. I don’t believe there’s much value in getting both – choose which one works best for you. I think that either exam is suitable for a scrum credential, but I’ve found the CSM referenced more often in job listings and it seems to be more widely known. I would highly recommend the PSM for Project Managers working in Tech who want a certification that is achievable and affordable.

About the PSM

  • No specific training or eligibility requirements
  • Relatively affordable ($150 per exam attempt)
  • Relies more on proving understanding via the exam vs the CSM training
  • Exam is moderately difficult (I was able to pass with a few years of hands-on scrum background knowledge and 2 weeks of study)
  • Certifications offered for levels PSM I, PSM II, PSM III and PST (Professional Scrum Trainer)
